RECORDING: The History of Recorded Music is an epic project, shot in high-definition and mixed in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound, that traces America’s history since Thomas Edison invented the first sound recording device in 1877 to the Internet. This groundbreaking documentary will explore how — in just 130 years — technological innovation and business acumen transformed music from a one-time, performance based event to a shared, portable and permanent part of America’s cultural landscape.

 

Series will explore four major themes:

    • The origins and growth of American music
    • The role of race and ethnicity in American society and music
    • Technology and its ability to shape, create and distribute music
    • The effects of music on American and world culture

 

Executive Producers: Quincy Jones, Phil Ramone, Larry Rosen and Lee Rosenberg Produced and Created by Larry Rosen RECORDING is hosted by legendary producers Quincy Jones and Phil Ramone

The project will feature 100 interviewees, including many of the world’s top recording artists, producers, music industry executives, scholars, musicologists and historians. Artists and industry experts include Quincy Jones, Clint Eastwood, B.B. King, Paul Simon, Pete Seeger, Smokey Robinson, Marilyn & Alan Bergman, Herbie Hancock, Rick Rubin, Phil Spector, Norah Jones, Clive Davis, Chuck D, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Les Paul, Donald Fagen, Tommy Ramone, Little Anthony, Dave Brubeck, Gamble and Huff, Keb’ Mo’, Honeyboy Edwards, Kenny G, Michael Feinstein, Jac Holzman, Dionne Warwick, Thomas Dolby, Dave Grusin, Grandmaster Flash, and Dr. John Hasse to name a few participants.

RECORDING will premier nationally, in HD with 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound and will be internationally distributed on Blu-Ray and multiple digital formats. In addition, the following are being prepared: a major label re-issue series; a traveling museum exhibition in conjunction with major institutions; a companion coffee table book; an exclusive collection of world-class photography; and an in-depth educational program with a multi-media searchable database.
